Windsor Excessive Faculty’s Kellen Ball tied for second after Day 1 of boys state golf match

Windsor sophomore Kellen Ball is tied for second place after the first day of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A boys state golf tournament Monday at Pelican Lakes Golf Course in Windsor.

Ball shot a 2-under par 70 in the first round to earn a spot in the three-man final pairing on Tuesday morning.

Ball is scheduled to tee off at 11:10 am with leader Sawyer Klein of Denver North and Falcon’s Reese Knox. Klein shot a 3-under 69 Monday to take a one-stroke lead on Ball and Knox.

The host Wizards are third in the team standings at 7-over par. Windsor’s second best performance Monday came from sophomore Tadese Keyworth with a 4-over 76. He tees off at 10:10 am Tuesday.

In Class 3A, Vail Mountain holds a two-shot lead (11-over) on Resurrection Christian after Day 1 at Pinehurst Country Club’s Maxwell Course in Denver.

Resurrection Christian freshman Clint Summers is the individual leader after 1-under park 69 Monday. He leads Montezum Cortez senior Thayer Plewe by one shot and is two up on on Holy Family junior Rudiger Heitz (1 over).

All three golfers tee off at 11 am Tuesday for round two. Severance senior Brycen Farris is tied for 11th after shooting 5-over 75 on Monday. He tees off at 10:30 am Tuesday.

Eaton’s Peyton Walker was 7-over (77) after the first round. Walker is scheduled to tee off at 9:50 am Tuesday.

Ball finished the front nine at even par 36. He birdied the 414-yard, par 4 at No. 3 and carded a bogey on par 3 ninth hole.

Ball had an eagle on the 510-yard par 5 11th with birdies at Nos. 15 and 17. Ball ended the round with a bogey on 18, a 490-yard par 4.

Klein started the day 2-over par after the first two holes, but reversed his fortunes for the day with three birdies on the front nine. He added three more birdies on the back nine — with bogey — to land at 3-under for the day.

Riverdale Ridge at Thornton leads the team standings at 1-over heading into Tuesday. Cheyenne Mountain is two back at 3-over, followed by Windsor.
