Windsor automotive lovers donate massive to Windsor Regional Hospital

A Windsor-Essex club celebrating a brand of muscle cars has come up big for Windsor Regional Hospital.

The Corvette Club of Windsor dropped off this week a $21,000 check to the hospital to support its Pediatric Oncology Satellite Unit.

“It’s the most money we’ve ever raised at a car show,” said Corvette Club chairman Bryan Hansen. “We have a lot of friends, relatives, kids and grandkids that have been affected by cancer, and we thought this would be a good one to donate to.”

Along with the presentation, about 30 club members did a drive-by parade on the Metropolitan Campus as a thank-you to the frontline staff who had worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hospital’s pediatric oncology unit is an outpatient clinic that concentrates on follow-up care for those under 18 who have had tertiary cancer treatment.

“We really appreciate this donation,” said Program Manager of Paediatrics Devon Lanspeary. “We’re actually seeing an increase in kids that we have to treat, so with this money, we’re able to better serve them and improve their experience.”

Lanspeary added that the care provided in Windsor helps remove some of the burden parents feel, as in many cases it saves them from driving to London, Toronto, or Detroit for treatment.

To date, the Corvette Club has raised $80,000 for the unit.

Complete information about the hospital’s pediatric programs can be found on the WRH’s official website.
