Sturdy strike vote from unionized Caesars Windsor staff

Unifor Local 444 members at Caesars Windsor have given their bargaining team a stroke strike mandate should they walk off the job.

In a virtual vote held on Tuesday, 94 per cent of members who voted cast a ballot in favour.

The union did not say what percentage of its members voted. A call inquiring the percentage by WindsorNewsToday.ca was not returned by publication.

Talks between the union and Caesars Windsor started last month, and wages and benefits are the key issues.

The current contract expires at 11:59 pm on Saturday, April 2.

It’s been a difficult two years for the casino. COVID-19 restrictions shut it down for much of the pandemic.

The union represents about 1,800 workers at Caesars Windsor. Before COVID-19, it had 2,200 members.
