Rilea Driscoll, Hunter Waterman lead Windsor at Valley swimming invite; Aaron Trujillo certainly one of many wrestlers to excel for Vikings – Prep Roundup for Dec. 4

Aurora – Greeley Central used a huge fourth quarter to beat Windsor on the road 61-53. The Wildcats trailed by one going into the final period, then outscored the Wizards 22-13 to pull away for an eight-point win Saturday at the Vista PEAK Invitational.

Sam Perez scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds – seven of them offensive – to lead Central, which also got 12 points, five rebounds and two assists from Xavier Bonham.

Tyler McGinnis and Kirk Relford each dropped 13 points for Windsor, but Relford shot just 3 of 10 from beyond the arc. Jake Hammond dished seven assists for the Wizards but equaled that in turnovers.

Central is 1-2, and Windsor is 0-3 after the loss.

Dayspring Christian 49, Limon 37: In Kiowa, Dayspring Christian wrapped up an undefeated Kiowa tournament with a solid win over Limon.

Eagles coach Jason Fast praised his team’s defense in the first half, which limited Limon to 10 points.

Jonathan Cowles led Dayspring with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

The Eagles are 2-0 after the win.

Frontier Academy 71, Ridge View Academy 65: In Bennett, Frontier Academy weathered a late storm from Ridge View Academy and improved to 3-0.

Zach Hidalgo continued his hot scoring to begin the season with 24 points. He also added 11 rebounds for the Wolverines.

Jordan Morgan scored 15 points and grabbed nine boards, and Hunter Umholtz also contributed 10 points.

Highland 53, Yuma 26: In Yuma, Highland used a dominant defensive performance to start its season 3-0.

The Huskies limited Yuma to fewer than 10 points in each of the final three quarters. They had 19 steals as a team.

“We were able to put pressure on Yuma’s guards and generate some turnovers, which helped us convert some easy scores,” Highland coach Efren Perez said in an email.

Cole Rouse led the team with 17 points and four assists – he also grabbed seven boards – but Koby Anderson was the star, dropping 16 points, 11 rebounds and six steals.

Greeley West 76, Gering 72: In Sidney, Neb., Greeley West won its second game in a row to finish the early-season Western Conference Tournament 2-1.

Andre Sepeda led the Spartans with 24 points, including three 3-pointers, and Darren Delacroix contributed 14 points.

West coach Brett Cloepfil said that the Spartans gave up a few big runs in the middle of the game, and almost blew a big lead, but still held on.

“Our young guys played through adversity and did a good job of finishing the game,” Cloepfil said.

EATON – Eaton improved to 3-0 with a sloppy, 39-22 win over Platte Valley. Eaton shot just 32 percent from the field in victory, but it was enough Friday in the Northern Colorado Roundball Classic.

“It was a typical early season game and wasn’t the prettiest game by any means but I was proud of our effort,” Eaton coach Todd Hernandez said in an email.

But Eaton forced 17 steals, including six by Courtney Leafgren.

Platte Valley fell to 1-2.

Thomas Jefferson 43, Greeley Central 40 (OT): In Aurora, Greeley Central lost an achingly close game to wrap up their season-opening Bison Bash Tournament.

The Wildcats led Thomas Jefferson by six points with less than a minute left, and Thomas Jefferson hadn’t hit a 3-pointer all game – until it buried two in that last minute to force overtime.

Central only scored two points in the extra frame. Wildcats coach Juliet Sheets said that her team had trouble boxing out, and that they gave up those 3s at the end because they tried to run their offense instead of killing clock.

Korina Ramirez scored 16 points and dished five assists, Naomi Hidalgo scored 15 and Maddie Willers added six points and eight rebounds.

Central finished its early season tournament 1-2.

Yuma 34, Highland 23: In Ault, Highland struggled mightily against a stout Yuma defense and lost its first game of the season.

The Huskies couldn’t manage more than seven points in any quarter. Their leading scorer, Maison Tolle, dropped only five points.

Still coach Steve Latuda said that his team played well on defense, particularly Izzy Himmel, who grabbed nine rebounds and three steals.

Highland is now 2-1.

Kiowa 59, Dayspring Christian 41: In Kiowa, Dayspring Christian handled a tough Kiowa full-court press but couldn’t contain enough of Kiowa’s shooting to win.

Megan Roberts scored 27 points and added seven blocks, five rebounds and three steals for the Eagles. Brooke Shenkenberg added 11 points and played what coach Tina Beauvais called “really tenacious” defense.

Estes Park 48, Valley 42: In Estes Park, foul trouble, and clutch free-throw shooting by Estes Park, prevented Valley from coming back to win.

The Vikings’ four leading scorers – Priscilla Lozoya (14 points), Kendra Sotelo (8), Gabby Rios (7) and Kenzie Ray (6) – all fouled out.

Valley coach Ashley Van Slyke said that her team had to foul to get back into the game, but they couldn’t complete the comeback with their best players on the bench.

The Vikings are now 1-2.

Windsor 53, Vista Peak 47: In Aurora, Windsor improved to 3-0 this season behind a near triple-double from Michaela Moran. She scored 18 points and added seven rebounds and eight steals.

The Wizards only outscored Vista Peak in one quarter – the first, when they got out to a 20-3 lead – but it was enough, as Vista Peak could never quite catch up.

GILCREST – Led by senior Rilea Driscoll and junior Hunter Waterman, Windsor (233 points) placed second behind Mountain Range (315) in the 13-team Valley Invitational on Saturday.

Driscoll won the 200-yard freestyle with a Class 4A state-qualifying time of 2 minutes, 6.92 seconds. Driscoll also won the 500 freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 5:45.11.

Her Windsor teammate, Waterman, won the 50 freestyle with a 4A-qualifying time of 26.40. She was second in the 100 breaststroke with a state-qualifying time of 1:13.12.

Driscoll anchored and Waterman led off the Wizards’ state-qualifying, runner-up 400 freestyle relay team (4:00.71).

Greeley West freshman Grace Chahal continued her stellar start to her high school career, winning the 200 individual medley (2:26.39). She also had a fourth-place performance in the 100 backstroke (1:06.79).

The Spartans (143) were fourth in the team standings. Greeley Central and host Valley tied for eighth with 57 points apiece.

Eaton (14) was 11th.

Fort Lupton – In its first action of the season, three-time defending Class 3A champion Valley scored 137 points to finish as the runner-up to 5A Grandview (167) in the eighth-team Fort Lupton Invitational on Saturday.

The Vikings had eight wrestlers place fourth or higher, including individual champions Brandon Damian (138 pounds), defending state champion Aaron Trujillo (145), Jaziah Whaley (152) and Josh Flanagan (170).

Host Fort Lupton (110 points) placed fourth as a team. Greeley West (103) was fifth, and Northridge (59) placed eighth.

The Bluedevils had two individual champions: Jacob Duran (106) and two-time defending state champion Jody Sandoval II (132).

Greeley West senior Xavier Vasquez won the 195-pound title.

Windsor places second at home dual tournament: In Windsor, the Wizards went 4-1 in duals but lost in the first-place dual, 36-29, to Scottsbluff.

Windsor picked up a 60-24 win against Fort Morgan, a 64-12 win against Horizon, a 61-11 victory against Thompson Valley, and a 55-19 win against Rocky Mountain.

At 138/145 pounds, defending state champion Chris Sandoval went 5-0 with three pins and two technical falls.

At 170, Gage Trusty went 5-0, including a pin and two forfeit wins. Jacob Parker went 5-0 at 106 with four pins and a forfeit.

At 113, defending state champion Will VomBaur went 5-0 with four pins and a forfeit win. At 120/126, Dominick Serrano went 5-0 with four pins.

At 126/132, Braden Peninger went 5-0 with two pins, a major decision and two forfeit wins.

Chuck Annand Invitational: In Akron, Platte Valley led a crop of Weld teams that comported themselves well at the Chuck Anand Invitational wrestling tournament.

The Broncos won the tournament with a score of 211.5, more than 70 points ahead of second-place Eaton. Colton Orcutt (113), Dylan Yancey (132) and Zach Waite (152) won their weight classes for the Platte Valley.

Colton Bruckridge (138), Adrian Rodriguez (145) and Jeremiah Land (220) were runner-ups, and Varrion Ciddio (126) and Joseph Crockroft (285) finished third. Edgar Duran was fourth at 120 pounds.

For Eaton, Jake Sandau won the 182-pound class. Toby Gavette (106) and Robert Guzman (195) came in second, Braeson Lewis (160) and Braedy Sturdevant (182) were third and Hayden Gavette (126), Ariel Rodriguez (145) and Connor Moos (170) were fourth.

“When it got time to score bonus points, we didn’t score enough,” Eaton coach Tony Mustari said. “We wrestled well, but we have a long way to go. We’re making silly mistakes that are costing us points and matches.”

Highland had one winner – Logan Lewis at 106 pounds. Dante Chiricingo (113) and Bryson Fogg (160) finished second, while Skyler Score (132) was third and Juancito Lucero (220) and Cody Johnson (285) were fourth.

Greeley Central didn’t have a winner – many of its wrestlers were wrestling in a dual against Pueblo County – but the Wildcats had a runner up in Ben Euresti (120), third-place finishers in Ricky Zavala (106) and Julian Vasquez (113) and a fourth-placer in Loren Johnston (152).

Emanuel Munoz Alcala was University’s only winner, in the 285-pound class. The Bulldogs also had two third-place finishers – Ben Anderson (195) and Caleb Naesner (220).

“It’s really huge,” University coach Easton Ramirez said of Munoz Alcala’s win. “He’s only a freshman and this is his first tournament. He’s wrestling out of his mind. It’s like he’s an experienced upperclassman.”

Pueblo County 44, Greeley Central 20: In Colorado Springs, the top two 4A wrestling teams from last year went at it in a dual meet at Pine Creek High School, which the defending state champions again coming out on top.

Greeley Central had some dominant individual wins – superstar defending individual state champion Andrew Alirez won by major decision, as did Andrue Rojas – but on the whole, the day belonged to Pueblo County.

With his win, though, Alirez has still not lost in his high school career.
