The Cambridges exchanged Kensington Palace for the 19th century, four bedrooms, Grade II listed cottage. However, less than a week after their move to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral.
Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte,7, and Prince Louis, 4, had to juggle their first days at a new school along with mourning the loss of their “Gan Gan”, an affectionate nickname given to the late-Queen by Prince George .
The news of the former Monarch’s death came the day that the three children began their first day of classes.
Meanwhile, the new Prince and Princess of Wales had to manage the dramatic shift in the Royal Family along with their new titles and roles while also having just moved house and helping their children adjust to their new life in Windsor.
A source close to the couple told PEOPLE magazine that the time was “stressful” for the couple, notably Kate.
They said: “Things were very tense that week; it was not exactly the settling-in period they had hoped for.”
Despite the challenging beginnings, another friend said that the pair are now enjoying the move much more with the children being able to “freely play” in the rural parkland.
The Duchess has previously strongly advocated for getting children outside to learn through active play and now her children have much more freedom and privacy to do so.

The pair visited Wales and Northern Ireland and have attended various events in London including the Duchess visiting a maternity ward in Surrey and the pair appearing on BBC Radio 1 to discuss mental health.
Thankfully, as the children embark on their two-week autumn half term break, the royal couple will be able to enjoy more time with their children in their new home.
The children broke up from school on Friday and historically William and Kate have ensured that their diary has been more available during their children’s time off school.
